Today’s artist is Speaker Davis. I have never met him in person even though we have been friends for years. I don’t remember exactly how, but I came across his music on Myspace back in 2005. I would play his songs on my profile page and we would write eachother emails and were email pals (vs pen pals). We have kept in touch over the years always filling each other in on the new happenings in our lives. I want to share his talent with you because I have always loved his music and I want to help spread the word!!
Speaker Davis is from Solingen, Germany. He is a Reggae Dancehall artist and used to go by the name Junior Banton (inspired by Buju Banton). Speaker started out in the music scene by playing guitar in various bands and sessions. Over time, he partnered with others and started a soundsystem called Jaspora Sound. He would MC for Jaspora while making riddims and writing his own songs. Eventually he wanted to perform his own songs and after that, he was hooked!
He moved to Leipzig in 2006 after Jaspora Sound broke up and traveled some more eventually settling in Berlin. He linked up with Ganjaman and made many connections. He was featured in Ganjaman’s last album and has performed at some of his shows in Germany. His reputation has grown throughout Germany as one of the best reggae artists and he has shared the stage many a time with national and international artists and bands. His decision to rename himself came in 2010 because he says he, “wanted a kind of new start whereby taking things more seriously and to another level. Therefore I wanted a new and more original name. Speaker Davis is inspired by my own Label called Speaker Movement.” So in 2010 he is officially working under the name Speaker Davis with his label while still creating and building riddims. He is working independantly with various artists, musicians and producers. Big up to Speaker!
